Traffic Signal on SR82
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON SR 82—The city has received a few calls regarding the traffic signals on SR 82 by Glenwood Trail and Market Place. These traffic signals, installed per ODOT specifications, serve as a vital safety measure, particularly in a signalized offset intersection like this, where they regulate traffic flow and prevent potential accidents.
Below are the details on why and how they work.
In each direction, the second set of lights is programmed to avoid giving conflicting information to SR 82 traffic and possibly causing a vehicle to run a red light. Generally, whenever the first set of lights for EB or WB 82 traffic turns green, the second set will also turn green.
As the phase ends, the first set of lights transitions from green to yellow and then to red, signaling the end of the green phase. Meanwhile, the second set remains green, and the left turn arrows are activated to clear any remaining traffic between Market Place East and Glenwood. This seamless coordination between the two sets of lights ensures efficient traffic management.
The second set of lights faces slightly downward, making it only visible to the vehicles between the intersections. This design prevents cars back at the first set of lights from seeing green and thinking they can move forward.
While the first set of lights is red and the second set is green, the lights on the side streets (Market Place & Glenwood Tr.) will also be green, so the vehicles turning right out on 82 can continue.
If a vehicle driving east or westbound encounters a red light at the second 'downward-facing' traffic signal, it means that the driver ran through the first red light. This violation of traffic rules not only disrupts the traffic flow but also poses a safety risk. Additionally, suppose anyone turns right on red from either Market Pl. or Glenwood Tr. In that case, they may encounter a red light on that second set on RT 82.
