BROADVIEW ROAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

We were within days of completing all work on Broadview between Sprague and Avery when a contractor hit a 20” water line which halted the project.  The rushing water undermined our new road.  Cleveland Water completed the water line repair on Monday and it has now been backfilled.  Therefore, we can begin repairs to the roadway damage that occurred. We estimate the cost to fully repair the roadway to be an additional $225,000. The contractor and his insurance company have not committed to pay for this as of today.  However, we will not wait to repair the road and will be starting temporary repairs early next week. We hope to open the roadway up by the following week. This will not be a complete repair until the contractor provides us funds which may require legal action.  You may want to consider an alternative route or extra travel time for a couple more weeks.  Thank you for your continued patience.

BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY REMINDERS

More people are riding bikes and walking these days—for health, ecology, and economic reasons.  As a reminder, bikers should ride with the traffic, obeying traffic signals and signs; pedestrians should walk against the traffic.  Drivers should conscious of bikers and walkers in the streets.  Cell phone use while driving should be avoided because it significantly impairs alertness and could be responsible for serious injuries—especially to bikers and pedestrians.

ANOTHER BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY SUGGESTION

Wear bright, light-colored and/or reflective clothing articles when riding or walking in the street—especially at dusk or dark!  This will prevent you from blending into the surroundings and going unnoticed to drivers.

POLL WORKERS ARE STILL NEEDED FOR THE SEPTEMBER AND NOVEMBER ELECTIONS

Work in our community and earn up to $200 per election.  Prior to election day, poll workers must attend an organizational meeting the Monday before the election.  For more information or to apply, call Ashley Boland at 216/443-3232 x4176.

RACCOON-RABIES VACCINATION

The State of Ohio and U.S. governments have teamed up to provide the annual oral rabies vaccination in northeast Ohio which will take place through September 24.  Vaccine baits will be dropped in various areas by low-flying aircraft and other methods.  One of the types of baits is a small plastic sachet (about the size of a ketchup packet), coated in fishmeal.  Another is a hard, brown, 2x2” fishmeal block.  Residents should avoid the baits so raccoons have every opportunity to eat them.  If baits are found in areas frequented by pets or children, toss them to deeper cover. The baits are not harmful to pets.  If a person is exposed to the red liquid vaccine, thoroughly wash with soap and water.  For more information, call 1-888-722-4371.

CABLE TV CONSUMER HOTLINE – 800/686-7826

The Ohio Department of Commerce has instituted a hotline to provide assistance to cable television consumers who are unable to resolve issues with their provider. The Department will investigate complaints and act as a liaison between the cable company and consumer.  For more information call 614/728-1709.

It is improper to fly a U.S. flag that is worn out.  It is also disrespectful to throw a flag in the trash.  Worn out flags may be brought to the Recreation Center at any time.  They will be given to the local VFW organization for proper ceremonial disposal.

IT’S A GOOD TIME TO CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS

Donate your gently used items to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.  (There are nice stores on Pearl Road near W.130th and Sprague, respectively.)  The revenue generated from selling those items supports worthwhile programs.  In addition, the items are kept out of the landfill which cuts our dumping costs.

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED

The Human Services Department is in need of drivers to provide rides to local senior citizens for medical appointments, etc.  Call Amy Washabaugh at 440/526-4685 for more information.

DONATE UNWANTED GOODS

Businesses and residents can donate their unwanted items using a helpful book published by the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District called “Pass It On—A Resource-full Guide to Donating Usable Stuff”.  Reprinted in January 2010, the 5th edition lists 140 community service and not-for-profit organizations that use donated items to support their work.  Toys, art supplies, clothing, books, school supplies, office equipment, sporting goods, tools, furniture and more can be donated using this guide.  Donating usable goods helps others and reduces waste that goes to the landfill. The Solid Waste District‘s website contains a searchable database of the book: www.cuyahogaswd.org/residents/passiton.asp  A printable PDF is available at www.cuyahogaswd.org/pdf/passiton_10.pdf.  Free hard copies can be requested at 216/698-2265.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG DISCOUNT PROGRAM

Residents without health insurance, a traditional benefits plan, or with uncovered prescriptions can take advantage of savings on prescription drugs.  The Prescription Discount Card is available to residents of Broadview Heights in collaboration with the National League of Cities (NLC) and is made possible through the City’s membership in NLC.  The card is FREE regardless of age, income or existing health insurance. By using this card residents may save an average of 20% off the regular retail price of prescription drugs at participating pharmacies.  To discover the savings and learn more about the program, visit www.caremark.com/nlc.  Residents may download a card or pick one up in the lobby of Broadview Heights City Hall and other area locations.  This is not insurance. Discounts are only available at participating pharmacies. By using this card, participants agree to pay the entire prescription cost less any applicable discount. Savings may vary by drug and pharmacy.  For more information, call toll free: 1-888-620-1749.

SAFETY SUGGESTION

No neighborhood is immune from “crimes of opportunity”.  Please remember to lock your cars in your driveways and close your garage doors.

VOLUNTEER POOL

There are a wide range of publications on the benefits of volunteering.  It is said that people who volunteer in their community, church, and school experience a significant sense of health and well-being, not to mention the positive effect on the benefitting organization.  We are keeping a list of individuals and groups that would like to volunteer or provide community service in the city.  If you are interested being on the call list, please contact my office (440/526-3651) or reply to this e-mail. No experience is necessary, however, if you have special interests or talents (i.e., computer skills, construction, professional advisor or entertainer, etc.), please make that known.  There is no obligation to accept a request and you can remove yourself at any time.

DISPOSAL OF ALKALINE BATTERIES

Alkaline batteries can be safely disposed of with normal household waste. They are composed primarily of common metals (steel, zinc and manganese) and do not pose a health or environmental risk during normal use or disposal. It is important NOT to dispose of large amounts of alkaline batteries in a group. Used batteries are often not completely "dead." Grouping used batteries together can bring these "live" batteries into contact with one another, creating safety risks. Throwing away one or two batteries as they are exhausted is perfectly acceptable.

ZERO TOLERANCE

Be mindful that the City of Broadview Heights has a Zero-Tolerance policy for underage use of tobacco and alcohol, use of illegal drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence, and providing alcohol to minors.
