$1.25 MILLION GRANT ANNOUNCED

AWARD FOR CLEAN AUDIT

Auditor of State Dave Yost’s office is responsible for auditing all public entities in Ohio. His mission is to protect Ohioans’ tax dollars while aggressively fighting fraud, waste and misuse of public money. Audit reports are released semi-weekly. The City of Broadview Heights was named on September 27, 2011 as one of the few entities earning the “Auditor of State Award”.  It is awarded when there are no findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, questioned costs, ethics referrals, questioned costs less than $10,000, etc.  It is a testimonial of our sound fiscal practices.  Congratulations to our Finance Department for a job well done.

SOLICITING IN BROADVIEW HEIGHTS

The City has several ordinances that pertain to soliciting:

  • Hours of solicitation are from 10AM-8PM.
  • No person engaged in business shall call at any residence which displays a NO-SOLICITATION sign.
  • Sidewalks and driveways must be used (no cutting across lawns).
  • No person engaged in business shall call upon any residence which is listed on the “Do Not Knock” Registry.

Solicitors are not required to register; therefore, they may not be aware of the registry.  For that reason, we strongly encourage residents to put any kind of “NO SOLICITING” sign in a visible location on their door to deter unwanted visitors.  If a solicitor ignores the sign, please call the Police at that time.  They will make the solicitor aware of our ordinance and issue a warning.   To download a “Do Not Knock Registry” form or view the list, visit our website.  There is a link about soliciting on the home page.

NATURAL GAS SAFETY – 8-1-1

It is important for everyone to know the signs of a natural gas leak:

  • SMELL – To help you SMELL a leak from a gas line or appliance, a familiar odor similar to sulfur or rotten eggs is added to natural gas.
  • SEE – Near a leak, you might SEE blowing dirt, bubbling water or an unusual area of dead vegetation.
  • HEAR – A leaking pipeline might make a hissing sound you can HEAR.

Remember to call 8-1-1 before you dig – even something as simple as posts for a deck.  Representatives from Dominion will come out with two working days to mark the gas line.

HELP KEEP FURNITURE OUT OF THE LANDFILL

The Cleveland Furniture Bank has a critical need for gently used furniture.  Help meet the demand of Northeast Ohio residents in need by donating couches, dining room or kitchen tables/chairs, dressers, living room chairs, mattresses/box springs and other items.  Donations are tax deductible.  Call 216/459-BANK to schedule a free pick-up.

CABLE TV CONSUMER HOTLINE – 800/686-7826

The Ohio Department of Commerce has instituted a hotline to provide assistance to cable television consumers who are unable to resolve issues with their provider. The Department will investigate complaints and act as a liaison between the cable company and consumer.  For more information call 614/728-1709.

NO OVERNIGHT PARKING ON CITY STREETS

Please remember that there is an ordinance prohibiting parking on city streets from 3-6AM – similar to other out-ring suburbs.  If you have a special need (i.e., driveway paving, out of town guests, etc.), please call the Police Department in advance (440/526-5400).

WORN OUT U.S. FLAGS

It is improper to fly a U.S. flag that is worn out.  It is also disrespectful to throw a flag in the trash.  Worn out flags may be brought to the Recreation Center at any time.  They will be given to the local VFW organization for proper ceremonial disposal.

DONATE UNWANTED GOODS

Businesses and residents can donate their unwanted items using a helpful book published by the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District called “Pass It On—A Resource-full Guide to Donating Usable Stuff”.  Reprinted in January 2010, the 5th edition lists 140 community service and not-for-profit organizations that use donated items to support their work.  Toys, art supplies, clothing, books, school supplies, office equipment, sporting goods, tools, furniture and more can be donated using this guide.  Donating usable goods helps others and reduces waste that goes to the landfill. The Solid Waste District‘s website contains a searchable database of the book: www.cuyahogaswd.org/residents/passiton.asp  A printable PDF is available at www.cuyahogaswd.org/pdf/passiton_10.pdf.  Free hard copies can be requested at 216/698-2265.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG DISCOUNT PROGRAM

Residents without health insurance, a traditional benefits plan, or with uncovered prescriptions can take advantage of savings on prescription drugs.  The Prescription Discount Card is available to residents of Broadview Heights in collaboration with the National League of Cities (NLC) and is made possible through the City’s membership in NLC.  The card is FREE regardless of age, income or existing health insurance. By using this card residents may save an average of 20% off the regular retail price of prescription drugs at participating pharmacies.  To discover the savings and learn more about the program, visit www.caremark.com/nlc.  Residents may download a card or pick one up in the lobby of Broadview Heights City Hall and other area locations.  This is not insurance. Discounts are only available at participating pharmacies. By using this card, participants agree to pay the entire prescription cost less any applicable discount. Savings may vary by drug and pharmacy.  For more information, call toll free: 1-888-620-1749.

SAFETY SUGGESTION

No neighborhood is immune from “crimes of opportunity”.  Please remember to lock your cars in your driveways and close your garage doors.

VOLUNTEER POOL

There are a wide range of publications on the benefits of volunteering.  It is said that people who volunteer in their community, church, and school experience a significant sense of health and well-being, not to mention the positive effect on the benefitting organization.  We are keeping a list of individuals and groups that would like to volunteer or provide community service in the city.  If you are interested being on the call list, please contact my office (440/526-3651) or reply to this e-mail. No experience is necessary, however, if you have special interests or talents (i.e., computer skills, construction, professional advisor or entertainer, etc.), please make that known.  There is no obligation to accept a request and you can remove yourself at any time.

DISPOSAL OF ALKALINE BATTERIES

Alkaline batteries can be safely disposed of with normal household waste. They are composed primarily of common metals (steel, zinc and manganese) and do not pose a health or environmental risk during normal use or disposal. It is important NOT to dispose of large amounts of alkaline batteries in a group. Used batteries are often not completely "dead." Grouping used batteries together can bring these "live" batteries into contact with one another, creating safety risks. Throwing away one or two batteries as they are exhausted is perfectly acceptable.

ZERO TOLERANCE

Be mindful that the City of Broadview Heights has a Zero-Tolerance policy for underage use of tobacco and alcohol, use of illegal drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence, and providing alcohol to minors.
