Samuel J. Alai, Mayor |
Dear Broadview Heights Residents and Visitors:
Many thanks to everyone who attended the Broadview Heights Summer Festival, especially Pat Grimm, who organized this wonderful community event. Many new activities were added this year, including the first annual Mayor's 5K/1 Mile Walk/Run. Our festival is a Broadview Heights tradition that is always a great opportunity to gather with fellow residents and enjoy one another's company. Thank you, again, to everyone who participated in the Summer Festival.
With baseball season wrapping up, I'd like to acknowledge all the volunteer coaches and players who showed good sportsmanship, teamwork, and athleticism on our fields. I spent a lot of time attending games this summer and really enjoyed seeing the children and their families on the baseball diamonds, tennis courts, playground, etc, socializing and playing together. In an effort to recognize positive sports role models, I am announcing a new award that will be given to one team in each league that exemplifies good sportsmanship and teamwork. The award winners will be chosen by the coaches, league directors, the Parks and Recreation Board, and me. The awards will be given at the conclusion of the season.
Thanks to the generosity of one of our residents, Dennis Hudack of Spectra Contract Flooring, our Human Services Department has received $400 to purchase a Wii. Amy Washabaugh, Director of Human Services, had been looking for funding to purchase a Wii for our seniors to use, and Dennis was happy to supply the money needed to purchase one. Many thanks, Dennis! In addition to new "gadgets", the Human Services Department is in need of dedicated volunteers and community supporters to help the Senior Center to thrive and grow annually. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available and training is provided. Please call 440/526-4685 and ask for Amy Washabaugh.
Over the past seven months, the question I am asked most often is, "How do you like being the Mayor?" I ALWAYS respond that I love it and that it is what I was meant to do...and I really mean that! I spend a lot of time meeting with people about economic development, recreation, senior services, etc., as well as talking to residents about whatever is on their minds because it gives me a direct line to individual concerns. I can't address what I don't hear about, so I sincerely appreciate the people who contact me directly with questions or concerns. It's the best way to get things done.
If you haven't visited City Hall recently, please stop in the lobby and view our special tribute to our local military personnel. Laurie Goyetche, a proud military mom, is heading up a military photo display of our hometown heroes. If you know of a resident in the military, contact Laurie at 440/582-2765 or at lgoyetche@cox.net.
As you visit The Fields this summer, note pavilion improvements near Field 4. One of our young residents, Billy Thompson, volunteered his time to tear off the old roof on our picnic pavilion and re-roof it. This is in addition to other improvements made with the assistance of some dedicated volunteers. Billy spent the first weekend in June completing the project to earn his Eagle Scout Award. Only about five percent of all Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations, Billy!
Sincerely,
Sam Alai
